Estrogen Patch

The patch is able to deliver estradiol through the skin and directly into the bloodstream. This method is called 'transdermal delivery' and bypasses your liver which lowers any potential clotting risks as compared to other methods of delivery. If you have a uterus, progesterone should be taken in addition to the patch to maintain a healthy endometrial lining. Winona uses the Dotti patch, which is a generic estradiol patch.

The clear patch, about the size of a nickel, is applied by peeling off the backing and applying to the lower stomach or upper buttock area. This patch should be replaced about every 4 days per physician instructions. When using a new patch, be sure to remove the old patch. Place the patch on a new clean, dry area and rotate locations through the month. 

For some patients, estrogen treatment benefits can be noticed in as little as 2 weeks, but we recommend taking them for at least 3 months minimum. Women have reported improved sleep, less vaginal irritations, better mood, and recovered concentration, to name a few. The symptoms that result from the low levels of estrogen as we age can be relieved rather quickly. If not treated, low estrogen levels can result in more severe health complications like heart disease, depression, and osteoporosis. To that end, HRT also acts as preventive care for conditions like these and others, including Alzheimer's disease.
