DHEA FAQs

Why doesn’t Winona sell DHEA as a cream?

DHEA does not absorb efficiently through the skin. While some doctors may prescribe DHEA as a cream for localized effects or specific circumstances, oral supplementation remains the most effective method of administration for systemic absorption. Oral forms of DHEA, such as capsules or tablets, can be absorbed directly through the digestive system, allowing for a more consistent and efficient uptake into the bloodstream.

Does DHEA cause hair loss?

Winona prescribes DHEA at clinically-safe and appropriate levels, which should not cause excess hair growth. However, taking too much DHEA may lead to "hirsutism" or excessive hair growth, especially on the face. If you experience any unusual hair growth, consult your healthcare provider.

Is there a preferred time of day to take DHEA?

DHEA can be taken at any time of day. Our physicians recommend choosing a time of day that is convenient and easy for you to remember.

Are the DHEA capsules vegan?

No, DHEA capsules contain gelatin and are therefore not vegan.

Will DHEA help me lose weight?

DHEA may have an impact on body composition by potentially increasing muscle mass and decreasing body fat in some individuals. However, it’s not a guaranteed weight loss solution and may not work the same way for everyone.

Why do I need a prescription when I can get DHEA over the counter?

Although you can buy DHEA over-the-counter, the ingredients are not regulated, and you cannot be sure what you’re actually receiving. Winona sources the highest quality ingredients, so when you receive DHEA from us, you know you’re taking a quality supplement.

Can you take DHEA and progesterone together?

Yes, you can take DHEA and progesterone together. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone precursor that your body converts into estrogen and testosterone, while progesterone is essential for balancing estrogen levels and supporting overall hormonal health. Progesterone and DHEA can complement each other, especially in managing symptoms of menopause.

How much DHEA should a woman take?

Winona’s doctors have found that 25mg is an effective dose for most women, but it’s also safe to increase to 50mg if needed. Winona doctors never prescribe DHEA in doses above 50mg.
